On January 18, 1788, Arthur Phillips led the 11 boats of the "First Fleet" to anchor at the Port of Jackson, Sydney. These vessels carry 780 exiles, the Navy and their families, about 1,200. Eight days later, on January 26th, they officially established the first British colony in Port Jackson, Australia, and Philip became the first governor. Since then, it has become the anniversary of the founding of Australia on January 26, and it has been called Australia Day.
