Cockroaches are hardy insects, but severe cold can damage their health. Other homeowners are concerned about whether just leaving the windows open or having a cold snap is enough to clear up the infestation. Knowing their resistance to cold will contribute to success in this regard.
The majority of cockroaches cannot survive prolonged periods in freezing temperatures. Adults and nymphs can survive some cold exposure but and you will need several days of external temperature at or lower 0°F (-18°C) otherwise they will die as well as the eggs. But many animals hunker down indoors, where temperatures stay above freezing and they can burrow through winter.
In “cold” times of year, cockroaches like to move into warm, protected places like people’s homes, basements, and kitchen pantries. As a result of this behavior, outdoor populations may drop during winter, but indoor infestations may continue to thrive unless they are addressed.
Small infested items can be treated with cold. Freezing items at 0°F (-18°C) or lower for 24–48 hours can also eliminate cockroaches and their eggs. Natural winter temperature are not always enough for whole homes and together with some control regulating measures they are still required.
Beating back these insect pests in their own way-cool homes just isn'r easy without any drawbacks, especially without cockroach control. The best method will be to combine the techniques of sanitation, sealing the entry points and the application of specific insecticides with cold treatment to smaller items to take care of cockroaches on a more permanent basis.
