Can Scented Aromas Keep Mosquitoes Away at Night?

Close to bedtime, many people light scented candles, a diffuser or essential oils in their bedrooms in the hope of keeping mosquitoes away at night. Some scents, including citronella, lavender, eucalyptus and lemongrass, have insect-repelling abilities. Although these odours may reduce mosquito activity on the immediate body during the night, they are infrequently potent enough alone to ensure that complete protection is maintained until dawn.

Its effect (if there is one) depends on the location and concentration. Scents function optimally in close quarters, in which they can linger, and you generally don’t have to buy as many. It doesn’t take long to wear off in larger rooms or spaces with fans or open windows to move the air. Just fragrances alone often leave holes that mosquitoes can still penetrate.

To keep safe at night, supplement these scented smells with other things. Safety can be greatly improved through the use of nets over beds, screened windows, and applying repellent to exposed skin. By combining these methods you can create a more comfortable, bug-free sleeping area.
