At night, many people use mosquito coils to prevent themselves from being bitten. But is it actually safe to burn one while you sleep?
It is unsafe to burn a mosquito coil and then sleep through it, especially inside, and especially in unventilated spaces. The coil operates by burning pyrethroid - or other insecticide-laced smoke, which is able to repel or kill mosquitoes. But that same smoke can be dangerous to your lungs, eyes and skin, especially with prolonged exposure.
One mosquito coil is said to release the same amount of fine particles as between 75-100 cigratees in 8 hours, studies indicated. Although with low concentration, sleeping close to it through the night equals inhaling it all night long, and may eventually cause:
Coughing or throat irritation
Worsened asthma or allergies
Headaches or dizziness
Increased risk of respiratory issues in children and elderly
If you need protection while sleeping, consider these safer methods:
Mosquito nets (especially insecticide-treated ones)
Electric liquid mosquito repellents
Plug-in vaporizer mats
Air conditioning (mosquitoes dislike cool, dry air)
Sealed windows and mesh screens
If you must use a mosquito coil, burn it outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, and avoid placing it close to the bed.
Sleeping with a mosquito coil burning may not be a safe solution, particularly for children, asthma patients or small rooms. More modern (and safer) options, such as mosquito nets or electric repellents, can protect you without endangering your health by making you inhale smoke all night.
