All insect repellents are not created equal when it comes to staving off mosquitoes. The optimal way to protect yourself varies by setting — indoors or outdoors, and during the day or night — but certain strategies always receive good marks.
Among the best are those with DEET. Products containing between 20% and 30% DEET will protect you for a few hours. It’s thoroughly tested, safe when used as directed, and great for hiking, camping or night outside.
If you’re averse to a greasy feel or to the artificial, Picaridin (20%) or oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE, 30-40%) are good choices. This will give you strong mosquito protection that doesn’t have that overpowering chemical scent of DEET.
When you need to protect yourself at night, especially in sub-tropical regions, a mosquito net treated with insect repellent is very efficient. And covering up in long sleeves (or lighter colors) is also a good strategy in preventing bites altogether, as the insects tend to be attracted to people wearing dark clothing and exposing bits of their body.
For stationary protection (on patios or indoors), try electric mosquito repellent plug-ins, liquid vaporizers and fan-based repellents. Citronella candles may help a bit in outdoor spaces, but their effect doesn’t reach far.
